The opening ceremony of the Congress and the plenary session: “Challenges for modern statistics” were held at The Government of Novosibirsk region. On October 21 and 22 the Congress will continue its work at NSUEM.
I ORSK is the first large-scale event that is organized by Russian Association of Statistics (RAS), NSUEM and Russian Federal Service of States Statistics (RosStat) and focused on promotion statistics, its popularization, rallying of Russian statistic community and international positioning of Russian statistics. The Congress is dated for The International day of statistics, which was declared by United Nations on the 20th of October, 2015.
More than 200 Russian and foreign statistic experts gathered on the opening ceremony of I ORSC at The Government of Novosibirsk region. The acting rector of NSUEM Aleksandr Novikov, the director of Open Data Watch (USA) Misha Belkindas, the acting director of International Statistical Institute Ada Van Krimpen (Netherlands) and Professor Dr. Eduard Gerhardt from Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts have given welcome speeches.
- NSUEM is now on stage of dynamical search of specialists that will be demanded in the future. And statistics is one of those areas. – says Aleksandr Novikov. More than 700 participants have been registered on the web-site of the Congress. Representatives of the 50 biggest cities of Russia, 6 post-Soviet republics, 7 European countries and such countries as USA (The American Association of statistics has sent a welcome letter) Nepal, Malaysia, Japan, South Africa, Mauritius etc. are taking part in the Congress.
- We are happy to welcome our guests, both who have come and who will take part in the Congress in absentia. Here we will discuss problems, directions and mechanisms of the integration between Russian and foreign statistic science and also ways of Statistic course in Russia renewal. All these themes are significant. And what is so important for me that so many young scientists (students, analysts and experts) are taking part in I ORSC. 63 reports are registered by them. I hope that this Congress will be a great consolidating factor for integration and cooperation of scientists, tutors, producers and users of Russian statistics - says Vladimir Glinskii, Statistics Department Chairman of NSUEM, board member of the RAS and co-chairman of the Congress.
Also the plenary session held on the first day was devoted to: "Challenges for modern statistics."
- In fact, "the challenges for modern statistics" are not claptrap, they really exist, and there are many of them: the need of consolidation the statistical assets within the country, integration of Russian statistics in the global information space, improvement and increase of internal and external image of Russian statistics, etc. I would like to mention the issues associated with the need to reform the statistic education in the country - says Lyudmila Serga, scientific secretary of the software Committee ORSC I.
At the plenary session participants discussed history of statistic Congresses in Russia, and challenges of the sections’ integration in economic statistics, the skills of modern statisticians, economic dimension and organization of the Eurasian statistics system, the professional Statistician standard and other topical issues.
The three-day work program includes two plenary sessions, working of more than 30 sections, round tables, public (open) board meeting of RAS (Russian Association of Statisticians). It is planned to hear over 500 reports and reviews on activities of the Congress. Besides, participants will be awarded with certificates, gifts and bonuses to the winners with nominations of the section "Young Statisticians" at the final plenary session of the Congress.
