The predecessor of Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management so-called Siberian Institute for National Economy was founded in 1929. Unfortunately, due to the reorganization program it was dissolved in 1930. Over the years there had been the shortage of skilled specialists in economy, finance, accounting, etc. Subsequently in 1967 Novosibirsk Institute for National Economy was initiated and NSUEM is considered to be its successor. Thus, the institute had met this demand.
A number of students have been increasing persistently, e.g. in 1968 there were enrolled 250 students, and in 1969 over 800 applicants were admitted to the institute.
In 1994 the institute was granted an academy status, and then in 2004 it was awarded a university status. As a result, the academy was renamed to Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management.
Research activities have been actively conducted since the initial steps of NSUEM. Over the decades, the institute was involved in the following activities:
- in the 1970s, improvement of the intra-plant cost accounting system;
- in the 80s, drawing up long-term prospects for Novosibirsk and its socio-economic development;
- in the 90s, projects of transiting from the urban economy to the market environment.
Some structures of contemporary NSUEM were founded during the post-Soviet time. Currently, there are the following divisions, subdivision and units: IT Department, Law Department, Department of Social Studies and Humanities, Training and Certification Centre for Auditors under the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, Training Centre for Crisis Managers, IT Centre responsible for implementing information technologies at the entire university, NSUEM Case-Club, where student are able to develop their skills to find the best options and solutions to intricate working situations, International Business School, where some international educational programs are implemented, APTECH NSUEM International Center of Computer Education, an official center of APTECH WORLDWIDE), Children’s Computer School of Animation, where teenagers and children are taught how to use up-to-date technologies, Alumni Center, etc.
